The Weekly Collective: Nerding out & why Martha Stewart is my hero.

This past week was full of dinner parties, date nights, friends, and food.  It’s rare to have a free weekend in the middle of wedding season, but hey, I am not complaining. Since I didn’t shoot any weddings this weekend, Saturday night my friend Drew and I decided to throw a little dinner party for our husbands. Granted it was a very small “party” (it was just the four of us) because to be honest, I don’t think I could actually cook a meal for more than four people. Let’s face it, if it wasn’t for ladies like Martha Stewart, Giada de Laurentiis, and Ina Garten, my poor husband would probably eat nothing but canned tuna fish and eggs, and since he’s allergic to eggs, well, you get the point.

Anyway I pulled out my handy dandy Martha Stewart Everday Food Magazine and I found some great summer dishes for us to recreate for the boys. Here’s the end result…

{Heirloom Tomato Tartlets.  I will definitely be making these again. They were a huge crowd pleaser.}

{Lemony Pasta with Spinach and Shrimp- despite the ugly photo, the pasta was actually quite delicious. This was one of the easiest things I’ve made, EVER. Simply cook the noodles, throw the shrimp in with the noodles 3 minutes before they done cooking, strain, and toss in fresh spinach, lemon juice, and lemon zest (and of course salt and pepper). Voila!}

We also made a salad in which we actually combined two of Martha’s recipes and adapted it as our own. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a picture of it so I will have to bring it back on the blog later since a recipe without a photo is pretty much useless.

This week I took my nerdiness to a new level.  Not only did we get our Harry Potter on yesterday, but Will and I have spent most of our free time this week watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy. As most of you know, my husband is a HUGE nerd. And I mean that in the most endearing way. He reads comic books, is obsessed with Star Wars, and I’m pretty sure he’s convinced Spiderman is a real person.  Needless to say I never expected to marry someone with such special interests, yet, here we are.  And since we met I’ve been forced (I was basically told that not liking Star Wars was grounds for divorce) to get in touch with my inner nerd, and I think I’m actually starting to “get it.”

{Kaysha and I getting pumped for HP}

On the subject of Harry Potter, I have to say I wasn’t entirely impressed.  Yes, it was good as far as your typical Harry Potter film goes, but as the GRAND FINALE, it disappointed. Of course that’s my opinion. I will still forever be a Harry Potter fan, and I am sad to see it end. But as they say, all good things must come to an end.

I’ll leave you with a cute photo of Will and I taken by Kaysha during our (double) date night…

Happy Monday!!!

Will - I don’t like the nerd bashing in this post — but those tarts were sooooo good.

Richard & Beverly | Irvine Jewish Temple Wedding Photography

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it a million times over. I have the best job!  I get to document the happiest day of people’s lives, and I get to experience so much love, joy, and laughter all while I’m working.  I couldn’t ask for anything better than that. Richard and Beverly’s wedding was one of those experiences, where with each photo I snapped I couldn’t help but smile behind my camera a just little. These two were mad for each other.  Each time Richard caught a glimpse of his bride he shouted, “I am the luckiest man alive!”  Yes he is.

The wedding took place at Temple Shir Ha-Ma’alot in Irvine where Richard is actually known as Rabbi Steinberg.  His lovely bride, Beverly, is from South Africa, so there was quite a unique mix of guests sharing the day with them.  Not to mention the six kids between the two of them.  They are the new Brady Brunch of the 21st century.;)

Beverly made a simply stunning bride.

Richard seeing his beautiful bride for the first time…

These boys had me in tears laughing all throughout the day.  Beverly and the girls definitely have their hands full.

The signing of the Ketubah (the wedding contract) was hands down my favorite part of the day. It was so intimate and a true celebration of these two families coming together to form one super family.

A beautiful moment between Beverly and her mother.

Even with a room full of people they were able to share an intimate moment which I loved…

Happiness is…

Time to dance…

Each of their childern gave an awesome speech where I found myself laughing and crying all at the same time.

Congratulations Richard, Beverly, and kids!!! Two families are now one.

The Weekly Collective: A new hair-do & the Foodie in me.

Sometimes it seems as if the days just blur together and you forget all about the simple little joys that make life worth living. These posts force me to sit back and remember why I love my life.

Will and I took my parents to an Angels game this week as a late Father’s Day gift to my dad, who of course, lives and breathes baseball (and most sports for that matter).  I posted this photo of my mom and I on facebook while we were at the game and all I kept hearing was how much I look like my mom from everyone.  While I’m flattered because I have such a beautiful mom (shhh don’t tell her I said that), I really don’t see it.  So I keep going back to this photo trying to find the similarities…

{Okay, maybe just a little bit;)}

I’m starting to notice a pattern in most of my weekly posts. Food. Food. And more food.  If you know me, you know that I’m kind of obsessed with food. It’s really almost to the point where I annoy my friends and even myself.  I’m constantly on Yelp and other food blogs looking for the highest rated burger in OC or the best sushi in Irvine.  And local coffee shops? Love em’. I feel like my friends are always thinking, can’t she just be like everyone else and buy her coffee from Starbucks for godsake? My husband constantly reminds me of how much of a yuppie I am, and it doesn’t just stop at trendy restaurants. I’ve been completely and utterly sucked in to the world of organic fruits and veggies and free-range meats. But true yuppie or not, I really do believe that choosing to eat better quality foods can help prevent a lifetime of diseases and health problems. So make fun of me all you want, I like my organic strawberries thankyouverymuch.:)

{From top, left to right: Blueberry and orange scone at Le Pain Quotidien in Pasedena (yet again), organic strawberries from the Famers Market, my beloved Kean coffee, my take on a healthy margarita “pizza” with whole wheat pita bread, basil, fresh mozzarella, and olive oil and garlic}

Last but not least, I got my hair done today and since I don’t usually do anything but the usual boring ole cut, I felt that some beachy highlights (on the ends) were in order. Although the change is subtle (you might not even notice a difference), it’s enough to make me feel just a little bit cooler.;)

{Thanks to my lovely Photographer, also known as my husband, Will}

Happy beginning of the week!!!

Kaysha - Good job Will, love the new hair and photos!

erik ofstedahl - I wanted to take a moment and give Marcella credit for denying Will any credit for those photos.

July 12, 2011 - 3:18 pm

Will - I really shouldn’t get any credit. Brandi set up the shot, and I walked over sheepishly, then pressed the shutter. I am on par with a tripod when it comes to photography.

The Weekly Collective: 4th of July & Summer loves.

I hope everyone had a safe and fun 4th of July weekend! I know I sure did! Due to the holiday weekend I’ve decided to move my Weekly Collective post to Tuesday this week. And also because I wanted to include the 4th of July in there.:)

As most of you know, the weather went from June gloom to summery and warm right along with our transition into July and I couldn’t have been more excited! Something about the sun really puts me in my “happy place.”  I finally made it out to the beach for the first time this summer, and considering I live only 10 miles away, it’s really quite sad. Nonetheless, I made it there, and my mom, little brother and sister and I (and Suki too) had an awesome time just soaking in the sunny day and playing in the sand. Here’s a little snapshot of the kiddos and I.

{Josh, Megen and I in Newport Beach}

The fourth was fairly mellow this year since we didn’t attend our usual 4th of July bash in Long Beach.  It was nice to have a more intimate celebration with some close couple friends of ours. We went over to our friends’ Erik and Drew’s new place and bbq’d, hung out by the pool, and ate WAY too much delicious food.  Drew and I concocted some homemade fruit Popsicles with her new Vitamix, (now I’m dying to get my own) and Kaysha made a devilish trifle. Then we went to their rooftop parking garage where we could see fireworks from all over Orange County going off at once. This is a bit embarrassing but, I actually have a tiny fear of fire and fireworks (which I’m slowly getting over thankyouverymuch), so I was happy to watch from a distance this year.:)

{From the top: Our little family (minus Pickle) on the drive over to D&E’s place; Drew, Kaysha, and I with our homemade Popsicles; the whole gang posing for an awkward/blurry snapshot taken with my iPhone; Kaysha and John watching the fireworks (Kaysha is probably tweeting, facebooking or something here)}

To finish today’s post I’ll leave you with four of my favorite current summer obsessions: Brightly colored nail polish (yes, I absolutely love all of Essie’s colors), hats for my less than awesome hair days (I seem to be having a lot of those lately), fresh flowers from the farmer’s market, and the oh-so-wonderful Tan Towels. A natural looking tan in towelette form, made for people like me who are seriously pale, allergic to the sun, but still prefers not looking like Casper the Friendly Ghost in a bikini.;)

{Top left image (from left to right): Essie nail colors in Sugar Daddy, Turquoise and Caicos, Sinful Colors in Dream On, and Essie’s Lollipop, Chubby Cheeks, and Cute as a Button. Hats from JCrew, Nordstroms, and Tulum Island Boutique; orange daliahs from the UCI Farmer’s Market; Tan Towels}

Happy (Taco) Tuesday!!!!

Anne & Tommy: Redondo Beach Wedding

What’s a beach wedding in Southern California without a little wind? Well, as Anne and Tommy might tell you, it’s definitely no breeze. Oh yeah, that’s my awesome pun for the day. When Kaysha asked me to second shoot this fabulous wedding with her at the Portofino Hotel and Yacht Club in Redondo Beach, I had no idea we would be dealing with monsoon-like winds on such a gorgeous sunny day in May.  But, you never can predict these things when planning your wedding, and Anne and Tommy were total champs. A little wind was not even about to ruin their perfect wedding day.

When Kaysha and I walked in to the amazing lobby at the Portofino, we both smiled at each other without saying a word.  We knew exactly what the other was thinking, “SCORE.”

undefinedundefinedundefinedundefinedundefined

It’s such an awesome deal being the second shooter. You get to hang with the boys who are always extremely entertaining.

undefinedundefined

Such a handsome groom…

undefinedundefined

And the groomsmen ain’t so bad either.;)

undefined

The first look…my fav.

undefinedundefinedundefined

Anne and Tommy had everything perfectly arranged. We even got to jump in a limo and escape the hotel for a little bit for some beach photos.

undefinedundefinedundefined

What a couple of hotties. And I don’t use that word for just anyone.;)

undefinedundefinedundefinedundefinedundefined

Anne, you are simply stunning.

undefinedundefinedundefinedundefinedundefinedundefined

These two were all smiles.

undefinedundefinedundefinedundefined

My camera always seems to find the little ones.

undefinedundefinedundefinedundefined

Mmmm, cake time!
